How to Install a Manual 1/4 Turn On/Off Gas Valve in a Gas Fire Pit

Installing a manual 1/4 turn on/off gas valve in your gas fire pit requires proper tools and techniques, especially when dealing with varying wall thicknesses. Here's a step-by-step guide for installation based on wall thickness:

  • Walls Greater than 2.5″: Use a valve extension.
  • Walls Less than 1″: Use our Stainless Steel Valve Mount.

Installing a Valve Extension

Firepit Outfitter's manual on/off valves is designed for easy installation on the side of a gas fire pit. Here's how to install them for walls between 1 7/8″ and 2 1/2″ thick:

  1. Drill a Hole: Drill a 1 1/4″ hole through the fire pit wall.
  2. Position the Valve and Flange: Place the valve body inside and the flange outside the wall. Screw them together to sandwich the fire pit wall securely.
  3. Tighten: Tighten the flange for a secure fit.

What If Your Wall Is Thicker Than 2.5″?

For walls thicker than 2.5″, you'll need to extend the valve using basic gas pipe fittings available at most hardware stores:

  1. Gather Materials: You'll need a 3/4″ coupler and a 3/4″ pipe nipple.
  2. Assemble the Extension:
    • Attach the coupler to the valve.
    • Screw the pipe nipple into the coupler. The nipple should match your wall thickness.
  3. Attach the Flange: Screw the decorative flange onto the pipe nipple.
  4. Secure Everything: Tighten the assembly, ensuring the fire pit wall is securely sandwiched between the valve and flange.

Most valves come with a standard 4″ key to turn them on and off. However, if the valve is recessed inside the fire pit, you’ll need a longer key to reach it.

Installation Steps

  1. Prepare the Wall: Drill the appropriate hole for the valve.
  2. Attach the Valve Mount:
    • Secure the valve spacer on the inner side of the wall.
    • Place the outer valve plate on the exterior for a clean and polished finish.
